Animal Health and Welfare Framework

The UK is establishing an independent animal health and welfare framework post-Brexit, balancing higher domestic standards with trade competitiveness and import parity. Led by DEFRA and the Animal and Plant Health Agency, the framework addresses on-farm welfare standards, live export bans, and labelling requirements while negotiating SPS (Sanitary and Phytosanitary) agreements with the EU. Current status involves clarifying which welfare measures will be included in trade negotiations and ensuring UK producers are not undercut by lower-standard imports.
