AI Safety and Regulation

The UK government is developing a regulatory framework for artificial intelligence safety, led by the AI Safety Institute and Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, with cross-government coordination including national security and international dimensions. The policy aims to establish independent safety assessments and assurance mechanisms for high-risk AI systems, building on the Bletchley Declaration from the November 2023 AI Safety Summit. Current work includes developing a roadmap for trusted third-party AI assurance and establishing the AI Security Institute.
