31A★ _ Clause 1, page 1, line 7, at end insert “, subject to subsection (2A).
(2A) Sections 2 to 4 of this Act come into force only when the Secretary of State has
published a report certifying that the proposed levels of environmental protection
afforded by the Marine Protected Area for the Chagos Archipelago established
by Mauritius are equivalent or better than the levels of environmental protection
afforded by the existing British Indian Ocean Territory Marine Protected Area
and a motion to take note of the report has been approved by each House of
Parliament.”
Member's explanatory statement
This amendment seeks to ensure that, before the ratification of the Treaty, His Majesty’s
Government has published a report certifying that Mauritius will provide environmental protection
measures that are at least as good as those provided by the existing Marine Protected Area and
that each House of Parliament has taken note of the report.
