The government commissioned the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) to produce a study on the effective management of surface water flooding in England. For this the NIC has assessed the current approaches to managing surface water and considered the role of a range of interventions including traditional built infrastructure and nature-based solutions.

The study, ‘reducing the risk of surface water flooding’ in England, was published in November 2022 which included 9 recommendations for government.

This government response formally responds to these recommendations. The government has accepted 4 and partially accepted 5. The response sets out the actions to strengthen and further develop the implementation of current policy to mitigate surface water flooding.
