The number of residents living in buildings with unsafe cladding is not clear. The Department estimates there are over 20,000 homes in around 240 high-rise buildings yet to be remediated with unsafe cladding similar to that used on the Grenfell Tower.42 However, this number does not cover all buildings with unsafe cladding. The Department estimates an additional 1,700 high-rise buildings with other forms of unsafe cladding, and an unknown number with unsafe cladding not classed as high-rise (below 18 metres).43 This puts the number of those homes affected in the many tens of thousands, and the number of residents into multiples more.
